Landscape Design Certificate

Certificate Program Information

This certificate program focuses on small-scale landscape design applications with an emphasis on sound design principles, good site engineering methods, and the creative use of plant materials.

This program is designed for landscape professionals seeking to upgrade skills, individuals who want to become professional landscape designers, amateurs with an interest in the art of garden design, institutional horticultural staff, nursery employees, and garden design writers.

All courses are located in the Education Center at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond, VA.

CEUs: 40.5 minimum
Timeframe for completion: 2 years minimum

Open Enrollment Track

  • Landscape Graphics (no prerequisite)
  • History of Garden Design (no prerequisite)

Entry Level Track

  • Introduction to Design (prerequisite: Landscape Graphics)
  • Site Analysis (prerequisite: Introduction to Design)
  • Site Engineering (prerequisite: Site Analysis)
  • Construction Methods and Materials (prerequisite: Site Analysis)

Certificate Track

  • Site Design I (prerequisites: Landscape Design Certificate Application, History of Garden Design, Site Engineering, and Construction Methods and Materials)
  • Site Design II (prerequisite: Site Design I)
  • Planting Design I (prerequisites: all courses in Woody Landscape Plants Certificate Program and Site Design II)
  • Planting Design II (prerequisite: Planting Design I)
  • Comprehensive Project (prerequisite: all courses in Woody Landscape Plants and Landscape Design Certificate Programs)

Certificate Admission Requirements
Applicant must submit the Landscape Design Certificate Application and the nonrefundable fee of $75.00 prior to enrolling in Site Design I.

Applicant must earn a minimum grade of C- for each course completed prior to proceeding to the next course in the Landscape Design Certificate Program.

Certificate Completion Requirements
Student must earn a minimum grade of C- for each course completed before proceeding to the next course in the Landscape Design Certificate Program.

Student must complete the Landscape Design Certificate Program with an overall grade average of B or better.

Student must submit the Landscape Design Certificate Completion Notification to the Landscape Design Program Specialist by the term’s conclusion after all certificate requirements have been met.
