A Student Perspective on the Class "Moment in Time I: History of Europe"

"[Moment in Time I: History of Europe] class has been an incredible which has resulted in the development of an uncharacteristic hunger for history.

"For the first time in my life I’m interested. For the first time in my life I can participate -- and contribute -- in a conversation with my high school sophomore about ancient history, a topic which he loves. The result has been newfound communication and the discovery of his internal desire to teach history as a profession. He even helped by reviewing my Salamis and Marathon topics.

"For the time in my life I can really relate to the release of a movie based on a historical event; my children and I will be going to see Alexander The Great tomorrow (although reports on NPR from historians are not great in reference to its historical accuracy; it’s Hollywood).

"For the first time in my life I now have a point of reference for all future historical study – the era of the Persian Wars. While not glamorous, it serves as the pivot point for putting events into context. Putting events into context has been the missing key for me prior to this class. It was all just a barrage of dates that bled together into one boring sermon. Now it has meaning and reference.

"Two additional benefits: I now can recognize parallels in current political events and, interestingly enough, in the behaviors of my peers in the workplace to struggles and challenges that have taken place in the past. I also have an acute sensitivity to the beauty of old texts. My husband is a historical fiction fan and his respect for the sanctity of old books no longer eludes me. The smell. The construction. The aged color of the paper. The typefaces. It’s all very intriguing and being an IT professional, I’ve learned there is so much more to historical sources than what Google serves up.

"Bottom line; you have succeeded in your mission! It’s all such a wonderful world that I am intensely excited to continue to pursue!"
