Dr. Marcia Gibson Named First Runner-up for 2007 Project of the Year

Photo: Marcia GibsonDr. Marcia Gibson, NASA Engineering and Safety Center Academy Program Director and Assistant Adjunct Professor of Human Resource Management, was named First Runner-up in the Project Institute Management-Hampton Roads Chapter 2007 Project of the Year Award.

Every year, Project Management Institute (PMI) chapters select Project of the Year candidates for the PMI International project of the year award. The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) Academy Program was submitted and awarded first runner-up.

The NESC Academy is a young organization, just under 2 years old. Dr. Gibson has handled the planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling functions for establishing and operating the Academy since June 2005. In a recent program evaluation of the Academy, both content development and content delivery received high marks.

To date, the Academy has offered six classroom courses in university settings to over 200 NASA scientists and engineers. These same courses are available online at www.nescacademy.org, These courses share lessons learned by the more seasoned and experienced NASA engineers and scientists with the more recently employed NASA engineers and scientists. Dr. Gibson runs the program through a NASA contract with National Institute of Aerospace (NIA).

NIA is a non-profit research and graduate education institute headquartered in Hampton, Virginia. It was formed by a consortium of research universities to ensure a national capability to support NASA’s mission by expanding collaboration with academia and leveraging expertise inside and outside NASA.

NIA performs research in a broad range of disciplines including space exploration, systems engineering, nanoscale materials science, flight systems, aerodynamics, air traffic management, aviation safety, planetary and space science, and global climate change.

The institute’s graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the fields of engineering and science through its university partners: Georgia Tech, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of Maryland, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, and the College of William & Mary.
