Teacher Licensure Preparation
Prepare to Become a Licensed Educator in Virginia
In partnership with the School of Arts and Sciences' Department of Education, the Teacher Licensure Program (TLP) offers course work toward initial teacher licensure for qualified applicants.
- Earn a Bachelor of Liberal Arts with a concentration in Education. This program option is for individuals who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree and are interested in teaching.
- Earn a Graduate Certificate in Teacher Licensure Preparation. The comprehensive Graduate Certificate in Teacher Licensure Preparation requires 16-19 graduate credit hours of course work and 14 hours of student teaching and related seminar credits.
Eligibility Requirements
- Earned Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university -or- current Bachelor of Liberal Arts student at SCS
- Minimum GPA of 2.7 on all college and university academic work attempted
- Passing Praxis scores
Admission Requirements
- Submission of program application and supporting documents according to established deadlines (contact the program coordinator to receive an application packet)
- Submission of passing scores on Praxis I and Praxis II. (Passing scores on each Praxis section is required. See passing scores for Virginia at www.ets.org.) Note: Satisfactory SAT or ACT scores taken within the past 15 years may be substituted for Praxis I, with the following scores accepted:

- Cumulative GPA of 2.70. Providing all other requirements have been met, an individual with a GPA less than 2.7 will be considered for admission to the program on an individual basis.
Additional Information
In addition to the admissions form in the TLP packet, all applicants must:
- Submit a brief explanation of why you are interested in becoming a teacher (Limit: two typewritten pages)
- Have two official transcripts sent directly to the Director of the Teacher Licensure Program from each college or university attended
- Have official scores on the Praxis I and Praxis II or SAT/ACT sent directly to the Education Department.
- Enclose current résumé
Transfer Courses
No more than two courses or seminars, not to exceed six semester hours, may be transferred into the Teacher Licensure Program. A request letter along with a course description should be sent to the director of the program at least four weeks prior to beginning the program for approval of transfer credits.
