Interdisplinary Focus in Arts Management

A cooperative effort of the Schools of Arts & Science, Business, and Continuing Studies

This Interdisciplinary Concentration in Arts Management is approachable by Studio Art, Art History, Music, Theatre, and Dance majors or minors in the Schools of Arts & Sciences and Business. The program is available to Continuing Studies students as a Focus Area in the Liberal Arts bachelor and associate degree programs. The concentration provides opportunities for students interested in additional practical and academic experience in arts management.

Students complete course work for their major/minor as designated by their department. They also complete a combination of four required courses in arts and business (see "Course Requirements") and a 3-hour internship through their major/minor department. Two faculty coordinators oversee the concentration.

    • Internship
      MUS/TH/ARTS/ART 388: Internship

    • Electives
A coordinator may be consulted for additional recommended courses in areas of arts, business, or leadership that support the student's particular area of interest. An arts course in an area other than a student's major or minor is encouraged. This may include applied music study or music ensembles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to declare a concentration as I do a major?
Yes, you need to declare a concentration through the registrar's office no later than the fall semester of your senior year.
  • In what school do I register for the accounting and marketing courses?
It depends on your individual situation.
    • If you are a business major with an arts minor, you should be able to get both courses in the business school.
    • If you are a music, theatre, art, or art history major or arts and science major with an arts minor you are eligible to register for the accounting course in either the Business School or the School of Continuing Studies. You will need to register for the marketing courses in the School of Continuing Studies.
    • If you are a liberal arts major and intend to participate in the six-week summer Liberal Arts Business (LAB) program, you may need to apply to one of the coordinators for a waiver of the accounting and marketing requirements.
  • I see that some of the required courses are offered in the School of Continuing Studies. May I register for them?
Arts Management courses offered in the School of Continuing Studies are cross-listed in Arts & Sciences. You should register through Arts & Sciences.
  • How do I arrange and register for an internship?
Students should get approval to register for the required internship within the major or minor department (MUS/TH/ARTS/ART 388), then work with the coordinators to secure an appropriate internship.
  • What will I be required to do in the internship to receive credit?
That's up to your internship coordinator, but most internships require that you keep a journal of your internship experience, make weekly e-mail reports, and submit a written paper upon completion. Your internship coordinator may also ask your immediate supervisor to submit a letter summarizing your internship experience.
