University of Richmond

The History of SCS

The School of Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond dates back to 1962, when University College opened on the corner of Grace and Lombardy Streets in downtown Richmond. University College was many years in the making, stemming from the University's existing Evening School of Business Administration, which was founded in 1924.

As University College, the school was able to expand course offerings according to student demand, including adding a summer school program. In 1963, University College organized the University's first study abroad program to Western Europe.

Over several decades, University College continued to develop and offer educational opportunities to non-traditional students. In 1974, University College moved to the main University campus in Richmond's West End, and in 1995, it became the School of Continuing Studies. It is now one of the five schools that make up the University.
